May 2024
Bank Holidays, Pilates and My Apprenticeship!
What a wild ride, I usually find May to be quite a forgettable month most years, it’s spring and it’s about to be summer, things are wrapping up and the weather is ramping up, but this was definitely NOT a forgettable month, from the first day up until the very last, today as i’m writing this, it has been a WILD RIDE. let’s dive in
I’ll start with the Bank Holiday, I brought my friend Jaz to Galicia to see my family’s orchard and also drive her around the coast as she had never seen the north of Spain till then. We got a free flight (thank you frequent flyer miles) and woke up at 4 am to catch the night bus to the airport for our 7 am flight (we were walking to the bus while people were still out partying lmao). After landing at 9:30 in surprisingly sunny Santiago we spent two nights there and we went along the coast, saw Santiago de Compostela and did a lot of walking around the orchard. It was definitely a food trip we ate all kinds of fresh fresh seafood and a lot of “Tarta de Santiago", as well as fresh fruit from the orchard. It was a great start to the month and a nice vacation before starting my new job!
Speaking of… What a wild ride! A very interesting experience learning a lot about industry, in the middle of wedding season mind you, and I learned so much in the two weeks I was there. I’m not going to lie, balancing the apprenticeship with class was a lot, and I of course got sick on the second day and worked an 8 hour shift with a fever. But it was still very enlightening and taught me a lot about what exactly I want to do within the industry. Now that the job is finished I can concentrate on finals (yay).
Fashion Trends of the Month
Replacing florals, my striped obsession has blossomed, while I was in Galicia, I perused my grandmother’s closet and she let me take some lovely pieces, including a striped blue and white summer skirt from the 70s, and a gorgeous short sleeve white button down with green and purple stripes. I have already worn the button down to golf class and the skirt to school, I even paired it with my dad’s old Adidas jacket. Another trend that I was sensing was going to be big was yellow and oh boy! now it’s all over my page! I’ve been really liking yellow ever since I started incorporating it in my apartment, just come over to my house and you’ll understand the subtle hints of yellow that really are everywhere! so yellow satins, yellow cottons are just so cute right now!
Focusing on what we’ll potentially be looking at this summer, I definitely think embellishments will be everywhere, be that tassels, beaded fringe, rhinestones. And saturated colours, strong papaya orange, gorgeous light blues, basically colour grading that would pop on old film.
Something I’ve been wanting to try and started experimenting with is fun hair styles, we’re talking mini braids, intricate buns, complicated stuff. I got the urge through figuring out what to wear to golf lessons (I know I won’t shut up about golf, so COME AND STOP ME!) but I really think that some more intricate hair looks with ribbons, clips and maybe small braids kind of swooping in front of the forehead like bangs could be super cute.
Sewing Projects of the Month
My Sister’s Graduation Dress
Continuing this big undertaking, this month I really cracked down, now that I had bought the fabric, I could start cutting (eek) and sewing the pieces together. I started with making the bodice, adding the boning, then the draped piece of the bust. I only have a few weeks of June to do the rest, the straps, loops in the back, and the skirt, yikes! Combined with my finals and graduating it’s going to be an interesting June! Having to do a lot of basting because velvet is so difficult to work with! I did end up doing a lot more hand stitching because it was just too much to do by machine.
School Work
May is the last full month of class before we finish! AHHH!! So I’ve really cracked down on working hard in class to finish the jacket. I lined the body of the jacket and installed the collar which I managed to do in only two days of classes! Listen, when I really crack down on sewing I can be reaaaally fast hahah.
